Rescue workers currently battling to save stranded six-year-old elephant
Rescue workers were tonight battling to save a six-year-old elephant after if fell down a hole - while walking to a restaurant to begin work as a tourist attraction. The six-year-old bull named 'Nam Chok' had been brought from Surin province in the northeast of the Thailand to Samut Prakan near the capital Bangkok. It was intended to work as a tourist attraction in a restaurant where tourists would pay to give it small snacks. But while it was walking on the road on a lead with its owner, the elephant fell down a drainage hole that was covered with wood earlier this evening. The elephant began panicking and the owner was unable to calm him. He called for help and the elephant was found unconscious trapped in the 4ft deep hole at 9:30pm near the country's main airport, Suvarnabhumi. A crane then lifted it out the elephant and moved it several feet away. Rescue workers are seen in the video performing CPR counting 'one, two, three, four' as the beast lies on the pavement with rain pouring around it.
Journalist Bandit Chalawa who is currently at the scene said: ''I arrived at about 9:30pm and the emergency services have been doing CPR for the last hour. There is a heartbeat on the elephant but he is unconscious. There's a lot of rain and its dark so the conditions are very bad. A crane helped to move the elephant at first. The elephant was walking with its owner to a restaurant when it stepped on wood covering a duct and fell inside.'' Dr Thida Lott, a vet who is currently on the scene, said: ''We're doing everything we can and we are trying to give assistance
