A landslide swamped a government building in Mountain Province, located in the Philippines' northern region, as the powerful Typhoon Yutu struck on October 30.

Residents had taken shelter from the typhoon in the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) building, which was being used as a shelter from the typhoon, but huge amounts of rainwater and mud overwhelmed the structure.

Civil Defense Cordillera Regional Director Ruben Carandang said: ''They thought it was the most secure building because it's a concrete building, so they went inside. Unfortunately they were engulfed by a landslide.''

Yutu, known locally as Rosita, made landfall at around 4 pm that afternoon in the village of Banawel in the Natonin district.

At least seven people have been killed across the region and dozens more feared dead.

Dozens of people fled to the concrete building which they thought would be safe. But huge amounts of rain water and mud swamped the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which was being used as evacuation center.

The landslide caused by Typhoon Yutu (local name Rosita) happened at around 4pm on Tuesday afternoon in the village of Banawel in the Natonin district. As of Wednesday morning, four people inside the building have been killed, five have been rescued and 21 are still missing.

Civil Defense Cordillera Regional Director Ruben Carandang said: ''They thought it was the most secure building because it's a concrete building, so they went inside. Unfortunately they were engulfed by a landslide.''

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) was today continuing its rescue efforts. ''There is an ongoing search and rescue operation. They have retrieved one body as of the moment,'' a spokesman said.

Seven other people were killed on Tuesday in four provinces in the Cordillera region, according to officials.

Typhoon Yutu swept across the island of Luzon with 87mph winds and 142mph gusts before exiting the land in the evening.

It came six weeks after super typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut) caused nearly 50 landslides in the Cordilleras, killing more than 70 people.
