Street racers shut down a major highway in California in the early hours of Sunday morning to perform reckless stunts amid crowds of spectators.

A video showed racers performing doughnuts at around 1:10 am on Highway 60 eastbound near Pedley Road, Jurupa Valley.

The clip shows drivers came close to hitting the onlookers as they spun their vehicles.

At one point, one of the spectators decided to try to cross the other side of the highway and came close to being hit by a truck and one other vehicle.

The racers shut down the highway for 10-15 minutes before speeding off with the Californian Highway Patrol giving chase.

Street racers from the IEMASSIVE event that began in Moreno Valley at 9:30 p.m. shut down Hwy 60 westbound near Pedley Road to do donuts. One car performing stunts almost plows through a crowd of onlookers and another man jumps the center divider and walks towards the right hand side of the eastbound Hwy 60 before returning to the westbound side jumping again over the center divider. The man is almost hit by a big rig and at least one more vehicle. The racers shut down the freeway for 10-15 minutes before taking off heading on the 60 eastbound again with CHP giving chase.
