Shocking attack by Monkeys on bird nests and their chicks

Buy video

Southern Africa has several species of Weavers – beautiful finches that usually nest in colonies and make intricately woven nests. The nests are usually hanging from the ends on thin, whippy branches that effectively protect them from most predators. There is a mixed nesting colony of Village (Ploceus cucullatus) and Southern Masked Weavers (Ploceus velatus ) at the Manyane Gate of Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa. The birds are not concerned by the constant flow of traffic moving beneath their nests, with the spectacular male weavers displaying over the heads of people. All of this changed in January 2019, when two female Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) moved into the tree with the weaver colony and began ransacking the nests, pulling out the chicks and eating them on the spot. The adult weavers frantically dive-bombed the monkeys, but to no avail. Most of this video has no sound – there was a bus parked with its noisy engine running while the Vervet attack occurred.
