Shocking footage from off the south-east coast of the Falklands, shows a male sea lion attacking a sleeping baby pup on the beach.

The clip, filmed on January 5, shows the sea lions resting on the shore when suddenly the dominant male, who seemed just to be grooming himself, grabs the pup by the neck and throws him into the air.

The pup's mother challenges the male while chasing him away, however the male drags the pup into the water, when finally he is saved by this mother.

The filmer, wildlife enthusiast Robert Humphries, told Newsflare that the pup survived and was seen still alive two days after the attack.

Dominant male Southern Sealions herd females into harems and mate with as many of them as they can, as well as aggressively defending his females against other males. Unsuccessful males, particularly subadults will often raid harems, attempting to displace the dominant male and gain access to his females. Invading males sometimes abduct or kill pups. This harem of Southern Sealions is on Bleaker Island off the south-eastern coast of the Falklands. The dominant male had a harem of 10 females, two of whom had pups. A subadult male sneaked into the far end of the harem, and seemed to be pretending to be uninterested in the females or their pups – but suddenly, after grooming himself for a while, he grabbed a pup by the neck and threw it against foot of the cliff. The pup’s mother challenged the attacker, but he grabbed the pup again by its rump and threw it about 3 metres (10 feet) into the sea. The little pup struggled out of the sea back on to the cobbled beach, with regurgitated milk around its mouth. The dominant male charged the attacker, and drove it from the harem, although it tried to sneak back a few times. The pup re-joined its mother, bleeding freely from its bite wounds, which were then pecked by Snowy Sheathbills and Dolphin Gulls. The pup survived – it was alive two days later.
