This is the dramatic moment a survivor was pulled alive from the rubble of an earthquake-hit supermarket in which at least five people have died.

The young man in his 20s was among dozens of locals trapped when the building collapsed after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Manila, Philippines, yesterday at 5.11pm local time.

Rescue workers had to cut a hole in the concrete above him before he could climb to safety - amidst cheers from the assembled crowd.

The nail-biting operation took place at the Chuzon Supermarket in Porac, Pampanga, and took several hours.

There were still dozens trapped inside the collapsed four-storey supermarket, in which several five people have so far died and nine have been seriously injured.

In one rescue at the supermarket, a man had to have his leg amputated before he could be freed from the rubble. He was carried away on a stretcher and is recovering in hospital.

Porac Mayor Condralito de la Cruz said: ''Every rescue is a glimmer of hope. Our thoughts and prayers are also with all those who lost their lives and their families.

''One man had to have his leg amputated and be removed before he lost too much blood. The victim’s family were asked first if they agreed and they allowed. It was the only option to save his life.

''We do not know how many people are left behind in the building but the emergency services are doing everything they can to free them.''
