This wild elephant held up traffic for half a mile after walking along a mountain road in northern Thailand.

The huge male elephant was seen emerging from woodland in Nakhon Ratchasima on May 20, and trudged out onto the concrete road and began walking up the mountain slope.

Motorists watched on anxiously as the bull continued for half a mile. It then appeared to lose interest in the road and took a sharp left turn up a steep bank and disappeared among the trees.

Onlooker Tina Roongarn, 27, said: ''This elephant seemed to have become separated from its herd and walked onto the road by mistake. Hopefully he will find them again.''
