A baby elephant fallen into an farm well in Maligawila in Monaragala on 24th may.The incident came to light the next day morning after some locals heard elephant trumpets and found the calf inside the well after reaching near it. They immediately called up forest officials and informed the matter to their fellow villagers.The locals tried to rescue the animal by themselves using some diggers and ropes,but all their efforts wasted as the elephant couldn't climb up with the path created by the villagers.Later wildlife officials arrived to the scene and guided the villagers and officers to cut a path on the sides of the farm well.After few hours 5 years old baby elephant was rescued. The elephant was eventually able to climb out of the hole and rejoin its herd.It was a joint operation carried out by Monaragala wildlife officials and residents of the area.Later the wildlife officials managed to send this elephant calf to Yala National Park.
