Riot police were deployed in Hong Kong on Friday evening after a small crowd of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets.

Earlier in the day at the Legislative Council, pro-Beijing and pro-democracy lawmakers clashed over who would take control of the house committee.

As the pro-Beijing parties staged a "coup de force" in the LegCo, the "Parliament" of Hong Kong, by ousting forcefully and not necessarily legally representatives of the pro-democracy opposition, the response from the street was surprisingly low-key. Despite calls to protest in Mongkok at 18.00, then 20.00, only some limited disturbance took place with a small group of people yelling some slogans on Sai Yeung Choi south street. Riot police which was heavily deployed in the area intervened swiftly and surrounded the group, subjecting them to identity checks.

As it wrestled the control of the LegCo, many fear the pro-Beijing parties could now attempt to ram through the legislative assembly bills such as a law punishing disrespect for the Chinese national anthem. In a desperate call, Charles Mok, said "we need the people of Hong Kong to do whatever they can do to win this fight". It seems that, probably due to the heavy police deployment, the "Hong Kong people" did not really answer this call.
