Enterprising African artisans and their wonderful curios – now with no income because of COVID-19

Southern Africa is famous for its artisans, who make wonderful curios including animals from wire and glass beads, bowls from telephone wire, baskets, and carvings in wood and soapstone. Many of the artists are economic refugees living in South Africa, and with high rates of unemployment, create crafts from scrap wire and other materials to create what is now known as township art. These talented young men and their families make a range of exquisite curios, and before the outbreak of COVID-19, they sold them to visitors at the Manyane Resort in Pilanesberg National Park. Now, with the Park closed because of the pandemic, these self-reliant and enterprising guys have nowhere to sell their work and are struggling to survive as the coronavirus crisis drags on. We are finding ways to help them, including commissioning beaded Koalas for sale in Australia.
