Desperate Zebra drinks muddy water – even after being driven off by a Buffalo
Drought in Africa causes great hardship to people and to wildlife. This muddy female Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) stood knee-deep in mud in the N’shawu Dam in Kruger National Park, trying to drink from the thin veneer of water over the mud in the rapidly drying dam. Her life wasn’t made easier as an old male “Dagga Boy” Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) approached, scaring her and forcing her away from the water as he passed by. However, she was so desperate for water that she returned to the muddy pool and began drinking again. As this drama unfolded another Dagga Boy Buffalo enjoyed a mud bath in the background, and catfish struggled to breathe in the mud to the right of the Zebra.
