Terrified residents watched as a beach tornado formed near their village in the Philippines.

Leizel Rapista Susan, who lives nearby, said her husband was preparing the fishing boats when the extreme weather phenomenon appeared in Puerto Princesa City on December 11 morning.

She said: ''Thank God it did not land on the field or else it could have damaged our homes."

The funnel-shaped tornado whirled for about 15 minutes and was gone before dark clouds and strong winds were experienced in the area.

Tornadoes are violent rotating columns of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. They can destroy large buildings, uproot trees, and hurl vehicles on their path.
