Bullfrog breeding frenzy after rain in Kruger National Park

Edible Bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus edulis) are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. They are large frogs, ranging from 8.3-12 cm (3.3-4.7 inches) long. Edible Bullfrogs spend about 10 months of the year in aestivation (dry season ‘hibernation’) beneath the soil, emerging in response to heavy rain. Large numbers of males gather in temporary shallow water with emergent vegetation and begin calling to attract females. The males chase and fight each other, charging, biting and tossing one another. Females that are ready to lay their eggs move amongst the calling, fighting males until they find a suitable mate. When this happens the male clasps the female under the arms and egg laying begins. Females lay hundreds of eggs which hatch in about 20 hours if the water is warm enough. This video was shot in the Malopenyana Vlei in Kruger National Park South Africa.
