STORYLINE:

After five years, Chavismo retakes control of the Venezuelan Parliament on Tuesday, despite the fact that the main opposition forces, led by Juan Guaidó, have declared that they will extend their functions for another year, considering that the legislative elections were a "fraud" .

After obtaining a large majority in elections in which the main leaders of the opposition political parties did not participate, the deputies of the ruling party will be installed in the Chamber amid the uncertainty of the recognition of their decisions by the countries that support Guaidó .

In this way, Chavismo will regain control of the five public powers in the country after having lost the majority of the AN in the last five years for the only time since it came to power in early 1999.

This Monday, Diosdado Cabello, first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), reported that Jorge Rodríguez will be proposed to preside over Parliament.

However, the recovery of parliamentary control by the ruling party won´t close the institutional crisis in the country, since the majority sector of the opposition, which ignored the December elections, resolved to extend the mandate of current legislators until there are "free elections".

In this regard, several of the nearly 60 countries that consider Guaidó president of Venezuela already anticipated the ignorance of him to the Assembly that he will assume today.

The Government of the United States reiterated its support for the Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó and ignored the new composition of the National Assembly of Venezuela.

The United States Department of the Treasury reported that they recognize Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela and "authorize the transactions and activities."

"We will continue to support the National Assembly, interim president Juan Guaidó and the Venezuelan people in their quest to restore democracy," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Twitter.

The interim president and current head of the Venezuelan Parliament, the opposition Juan Guaidó, reiterated on Sunday that he will install a new period of sessions on January 5, despite the fact that the Constitution dictates that the Legislative power he presides over must end before that date.

"They are called for the installation of the next legislative period, on January 5," Guaidó said to the deputies at the end of a telematic session of the Delegate Commission of Parliament, which meets during the recess of the Legislative.

"In 20202 Chavismo's goal and purpose is to regain the majority in the National Assembly of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (...) and we will do what we have to do so that the National Assembly comes into compliance with the laws and its operation becomes normal".
