Locals enjoy cooler temperatures on mountain in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Footage shows visitors to Thailand’s highest mountain enjoying the region’s cold weather this morning (Jan 14).
Visitors admired the flowers on the Doi Suthep mountain and its park as temperatures dropped to single digits, causing fog and frost. In some parts of the north, the temperatures were as low as nine degrees Celsius.
Weather reports say that Chiangmai will be enjoying the cold, windy weather for at least another three days. Some people were camping on the mountainside.
One local, Gam Kittisak, said: ‘There aren’t a lot of tourists, so we decided to come up to the mountains and sleep here. My kid’s schools are closed and I work online, so I’ve come up here to have a BBQ and enjoy the fresh air.’
Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned that temperatures will remain in the single digits until around January 18.
Meteorologist Seree Supratid, director of the Climate Change & Disaster Center said the was cool temperatures were caused by a high-pressure system from China. The La Nina phenomenon – where sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific are lower than normal – was also contributing to the cold, she said.
