Elephants play in rain after storm in northern Thailand
Adorable footage shows elephants enjoying the rain after a storm in Thailand.
The four jumbos swayed their trunks in delight as the first heavy rainfall of the year drenched parts of Surin province on February 22.
The elephants also appeared to be dancing while stomping their enormous feet on the muddy ground.
Sompong Yamdee, 55, a mahout who takes care of the four jumbos in the video, said the animal likes rain because it protects them against insects.
He said: ‘These elephants loved playing in the rain. It masks their body with mud which keeps mosquitos away and other insects who bite them.’
The elephant caretaker added that one of the jumbos, named Malai Thong, is pregnant and could give birth soon.
He said ‘The pregnant one is especially careful of her body so she splashed in the rainwater as well.
‘She will give birth to another baby soon to join her other offspring named Nong Nam Fon.’
An estimated 2,000 elephants are living in the wild in Thailand and a similar number in captivity. They are a protected animal in Thailand and killing them carries a maximum prison term of up to three years and a fine of 1,000 baht (25GBP).
