Little Red Flying Foxes (Pteropus scapulatus) are large, nocturnal, vegetarian bats native to northern and eastern Australia. Flying Foxes have fox- or dog-like heads, hence their common name. Their primary food source is nectar and pollen from Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Melaleuca trees, and they are important pollinators of their food plants. Little Red Flying Foxes roost in large colonies or camps during the day, flying off at dusk to find food. Their camps may be huge with up to 20,000 individuals in some cases. This colony was next to the Fire Station in Jabiru, the largest town in Kakadu National Park and the bats were disturbed by a man on a ride-on lawn mower. This bat colony was very unpopular with the local people because of its noise, the odour from their urine and droppings, as well as the damage caused to the canopies of their roosting trees and damage to orchard fruits.
