Flash floods in Tapan District, West Sumatra, saw villagers wade through knee-high waters.

Transportation routes were disrupted by the extreme weather and a number of bridges could not be crossed.

Around 800 houses have been damaged by the floodwater.

Flash floods hit two Nagari in Ranah Ampek Hulu (Rahul) Tapan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, causing hundreds of houses to be submerged in mud and other materials carried by the flood.

The two Nagari that were flooded due to the extreme weather were Nagari Binjai and Nagari Kampung Tengah. Transportation routes were disrupted, because water filled the highway. In addition, a number of bridges cannot be crossed because they were damaged by the floods.

Rahul Subdistrict is in a strategic location, because it is the entrance that connects West Sumatra Province with Bengkulu and Jambi Provinces.

Temporary data collected by government officials of the two villages shows that around 800 housing units have been submerged, with a height of between 1.5 and 2 meters.

The flood itself was triggered by heavy rains that have occurred since the last week due to the overflow of the Batang Tapan River.

To overcome this, residents hope that there will be concrete steps in the form of river normalization.

Wali Nagari Binjai, Jamirus said, "The flash floods that have occurred to this day are still a lot of water stagnant. We expect assistance ranging from basic necessities to handling how to prevent water from attacking residential areas. We are looking forward to help as soon as possible, because this has passed an emergency,"
