Three people were killed and five more were missing after a flash flood hit a village in Indonesia.

The residents were sheltering from heavy rain when the nearby river swelled and swept them away in Bima Regency in West Nusa Tenggara province, on February 2.

Footage shows search teams combing the area strewn with rocks and debris to find the missing locals.

Authorities said three people were found dead under fallen banana trees and scraps of wood, some three kilometres away from the village. They were identified by officers as Aisah, 5, Harmawati, 40, and Burhan, 50.

Search and rescue coordinator Muhammad Darwis said: 'Three people have been found. The remaining five people are still being searched for.'

The missing villagers were Ibrahim, 75, Yani, 28, Juliani, 32, Irgi, 4, and a baby named One who is 10 months old.

Satria Topan, head of the local meteorology station, warned of more rainfall and strong winds this month. He said: 'Be aware of increased rainfall and strong winds in the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) region.

'The development of weather conditions throughout Indonesia currently shows significant atmospheric dynamics towards the potential for increased rainfall in a number of regions in Indonesia, including NTB. Extreme weather is predicted to occur from morning to night.'

Heavy rain across Indonesia last month has caused hundreds of landslides and severe floods. Officials said dozens have died in the disasters.
