Meet Tawny Frogmouths – the world’s most Instagrammable bird.

A trio of nocturnal Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus strigoides brachypterus) has nested in Flooded Gum trees at Herdsman Lake west of Perth for several years. One male mates with two females – a phenomenon apparently not recorded in the literature, and the trio usually produces two clutches of chicks each spring and summer. The nest site is moved in some years, particularly if predators take a chick. This year the male was videoed sitting on the nest, with three full-sized Frogmouths perched nearby, at least two of which were adult females. In April 2021 Tawny Frogmouths were found by German researchers to be the world’s “most Instagrammable bird” after the species attracted the most “likes” on the image-sharing platform. Often confused with owls, they are actually more closely related to Nightjars, and are masters of camouflage, mimicking a dead branch as they rest during the day.
