Beautiful Great Crested Grebe chicks dive on their own for the first time as mother Grebe stands by.
Several pairs of Great Crested Grebes nested in Herdsman Lake during October and November 2021. This pair was particularly confiding, allowing close observation from a boardwalk just next to them. In this video the female Grebe was with her two beautiful chicks while the male was away fishing in the lake. The chicks began diving and swimming underwater, propelled by their webbed hind feet. The chicks tired after a while and floated near their mother as they all preened.
