The last section of main railway in the UK to run along a British street has been removed.

It linked the London Waterloo main line to the Weymouth Harbour and the onward link to the Channel Islands by ferry.

During late 2020 and early 2021 the 2kilometre length from Weymouth Station to the ferry port that ran along Commercial Road and the harbour quay was cut up and totally removed.

The rail link was disused for many years and after several accidents with bikes and cars and it was thought safer to remove the steel lines from the middle of the road.

At one time special passenger trains used the line for heritage rail trips but the line was over 150 years old and its main use was to ferry freight to and from the Channel Islands.

The freight service finished around 1972 and the very last train service used the line in May 1999.

Some sections of the line remain where they do not impact of road traffic.
