Dock workers handling new VW group cars strike over Fire & Rehire policy in Kent, UK
Port of Sheerness dock workers in Kent, UK went on strike for a third time today (January 20) over their employer GB Terminals Ltd. 'fire & rehire' programme to their contracts.
The workers handle premium brand Volkswagen Group cars including Audi, Porsche and Skoda - which are imported from Europe via the port - one of the UK's biggest for new cars.
The Unite union is concerned that more than 30 staff have been served with "fire and rehire" notices, which means they will lose their jobs if they don't sign up to the new contracts and are calling for an end to this practice.
