Superstitious rock climber rescued after scaling cliff face in 'tribute to mountain gods'
A superstitious rock climber had to be rescued after trying to scale a cliff face as a bizarre tribute to 'mountain gods'.
Amnouy Rattanachotiyo, 48, wanted to appease spirits by building a Buddhist shrine and visiting a monastery at the mountain peak in Trang province on February 16.
Upon finishing the altar, he rode a scooter to the top of the mountain before trying to climb down through the rock formation.
However, when he reached halfway through which was about 400metres above the ground, the man began shouting for help saying he could no longer continue as he was already exhausted.
Khaohuachang subdistrict mayor Chutipol Chouiratchakarn said: 'The man often came to meditate at the monastery. He is a Buddhist follower.
'He rode a scooter from his house in Songkhla to the monastery before walking up the mountain to reach the top. He brought a bottle of water and a bunch of bananas for energy.
'However, he could not finish climbing down because he was too tired. He had been climbing down for almost six hours so he was fatigued.'
The rescuers from Satun and Trang provinces offered a prayer with the monks before beginning the mission.
Soon after, he was safely reached by the volunteers and given food and water before being taken to an ambulance waiting below where he was given a first aid treatment.
Buddhism is the official religion being practised by more than 95 per cent of the population in Thailand as well as neighbouring countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
