Indonesian grandpa turns recycled goods into beautiful calligraphy

A 71-year-old grandfather, named Darnis, a resident of Padang City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, uses a used container for Islamic calligraphy that he makes, seen here on Thursday (April 21).

Darnis said "a number of used items that were used for containers were broken wall clocks, used photographs, used APL floor mats, and plastic plates.

Darnis looked carefully at the calligraphy with calm and thoroughness. after that, the writing is raised using plastic glue, and then colored plastic is attached.

"After we make the calligraphy, we fit the container we want, like this wall clock. This Islamic calligraphy business has been in dance since 2019 and currently, there are many orders from all cities in Indonesia. "I sell one calligraphy for 75,000 rupiahs to 5,000,000 rupiahs depending on the size and complexity," said the 71-year-old grandfather.
