Burmese protesters hang anti-coup banner on 3,000ft-tall mountain
Anti-coup protesters in Myanmar hung an anti-coup banner on the 3,000ft-tall Mya Leik mountain.
Braving heavy rain and strong winds, the protesters climbed near the top of the treacherous peak on May 3 to unfurl a 30ft-long red banner in Mandalay City. Reportedly written across the crimson cloth in white Burmese script was an anti-authoritarian message.
The struggle between armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the ousting of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. Around the country, thousands of civilians are said to have been killed during military crackdowns on protests.
