Filipino soldiers are building roads in a jungle area once used as a base by Abu Sayyaf militants.

Video shows a Newsflare video journalist on the trail with the Government soldiers in the southern Philippine islands of Sulu on Thursday (July 7).

"For 20 years, Sinumaan village in Talipao, Sulu [has been] a hotbed of Abu Sayyaf and the village [meant] the enemy, danger and a battleground between government troops and Abu Sayyaf," Newsflare's filmer said.

"After the liberation of Sinumaan from the threats of Abu Sayyaf this year, the military started building roads so that basic services of the government will reach the hard-to-penetrate area in Sulu.

Captain Ron Villarosa of the Philippines Special Forces says on camera. "This is Sinumaan a village on the boundary of Patikul and Talipao and this area has been under the influence of the Abu Sayyaf group. That's why we're conducting operations and giving community support in the area, it is a part of stability [efforts] through the support of the military.

"What we can see here, before there was no road. And now to enable basic services services to come in, we open the road and right now the community is experiencing flooding. That's why we have army engineers to resolve the flooding issue and continue the road construction going to other areas."

The Philippines and the US consider the Abu Sayyaf a terrorist organization for bombings, ransom kidnappings and beheadings, according to agency reports.
