Three villagers injured in clashes between Burmese junta and rebels
Three Burmese villagers were injured in a violent clash between Myanmar forces and Karen rebel fighters near the Thai-Myanmar border.
The civilians were caught in the crossfire as clashes erupted some three kilometres from Tak province today, July 4.
They were taken across the border into Thailand to receive emergency treatment amid intensified fighting between the Myanmar military, the Karen National Defence Organisation, and the Karen National Liberation Army.
Thailand's Ratchamanu Task Force said additional soldiers have been deployed to tighten security in border areas.
They said a five-point plan was implemented, including a rapid response unit that will provide humanitarian aid to injured Burmese civilians.
They also co-ordinated with local authorities and police to inform border residents about the ongoing fighting.
Myanmar military forces were warned to exercise caution when deploying weapons in the border area.
The Ratchamanu Task Force said it has also prepared fire support weapons according to the incident response plan.
Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.
Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.
Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
