Watch bizarre ritual of smashing coconuts on devotees' heads at this festival in Tamil Nadu, India
At this festival in southern India, a priest violently breaks coconuts on the skulls of willing devotees.
More than 1,000 people took part in the ritual, which took place during the annual Aadi Perukku festival at Sri Mahalakshmi Temple in Mettu Mahadanapuram in Tamil Nadu state on August 4.
The ritual is carried out either as a thanksgiving or as a plea to the gods for health. Devotees offer up the pieces of coconut up to the gods.
