British athlete arrested for wakeboarding on flooded road in Thailand
A British athlete was arrested for wakeboarding on a flooded road in Thailand.
'Wake skate' champion Daniel Grant, 24, showed off his watersports talent when he skimmed along the deluge outside Bangkok University on September 8, as monsoon rains inundated the Southeast Asian country.
Some of his fans thought the stunt was cool while others were outraged at the sportsman for the apparent insensitivity towards natural disasters and disregard for road safety.
Footage of the incident was sent to police and Daniel was summoned to Khlong Luang Police Station, where he was charged with violating the Traffic and Highway Act for allegedly causing danger to traffic.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Such said: ‘The accused met with the investigating officer and confessed. The case had been submitted to the court for trial.'
The half British half Thai athlete recorded himself wakeboarding in the ankle-deep flood as riders and vehicles passed by. He was also seen gliding next to a large bus in one of the clips as it created a wave.
Daniel and his Thai mum arrived at the police station, where he confessed to the charges upon receiving the summons a day after the video reached authorities on September 10.
Despite the confession, Daniel maintained that he did not intend to put anyone in danger with his stunt, as the road was quiet when he did it.
He apologised and said he would not have done the stunt if he had known it was illegal.
Daniel set the record for the youngest professional world champion in wakeboarding in 2010 and won multiple titles in different divisions in the pro men division.
