A doctor has sent TikTok users reeling after sharing a bizarre fact about farts.

Dr Karan Rajan, a surgeon and lecturer at the University of Sunderland, shares his experience and knowledge with his 4.9 million followers on TikTok.

In a recent viral post, he revealed that farts are actually "second-hand" – and that we don't even make them ourselves.

In the video, he begins by saying: "Consider taking 30 seconds out of your day to think about how weird farts are.

“Once I tell you, you’ll never feel the same way again.

"You don't even make your own farts.

"The bacteria that live in our guts produce gases after digesting the food that we've eaten, but haven't digested, like fibre.

"Our farts are actually the farts of bacteria. Second-hand farts if you will."

Dr Karan then goes on to explain that the weirdest part is how your fart is one of a kind.

He said: "Because the mix of your gut bacteria is unique. So your farts are customised, recycled, second-hand, hand me down farts!"

The clip has racked up over 1.4 million views and 102,500 likes, leaving viewers stunned.

One user commented: “I got some seriously creative bacteria then...”

“So what you're saying it's not my fault lol,” another person said.

“So it really wasn’t me,” joked another person.
