A pair of confused hornbills tried to fight their own reflections after spotting themselves in a mirror left out to clean.

Tour guide Ntshuxeko Doctor Munetwa was doing some housekeeping in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa, when he had to move some furniture around.

Hilarious footage showed two wild hornbills taking particular interest in his stand-up mirror as the couple stared at their likenesses looking back.

One of the baffled birds obviously mistook its own reflection for a rival, furiously pecking its beak at the glass and even hopping behind the screen to see where it was hiding.

Ntshuxeko said: “I took the mirror out to clean my room and stood it up outside when the two birds came over and were immediately engrossed by it.

“For the whole time the mirror was outside, which was around 30 minutes, they kept on coming back to investigate.

“One of them was clearly trying to fight its reflection thinking it was another hornbill challenging him. He even went behind the mirror trying to see where it was hiding.

“The other bird seemed a bit more relaxed but still it had a few little pecks at its assumed rival.

“As a wildlife tour guide it was really interesting to watch them. It gave me more of an insight about their behaviour.”
