A stray dog stuck between the bars of a metal gate was rescued in the Philippines.

The white pooch attempted to sneak through the structure while looking for food, but his body was too large for the gaps in Pangasinan province on October 16.

However, the hapless pooch was trapped when he slipped back the wrong bars, leaving him in an awkward position until kind passersby found him.

Footage shows the pooch with its body twisting among the steel gate's bars as residents tried to help him.

Local James Rizaldo said: ‘I felt sorry for the dog so I called my cousin and friends to come and help me.'

The residents used a red shirt to cover the dog's eyes to prevent it from panicking as they took him out of the structure.

The frightened dog stood still as the locals lifted him and removed him between the gates.

After 15 minutes, the trio freed the unhurt dog, but it ran away. A bowl of for and water was left in the area for him.

James said he has now adopted the dog to keep as a pet.

He said: ‘I have many dogs at home, he will be happy there. I just need to befriend him first. Right now, the dog lives around our neighbourhood.'
