Residents recycle old food trays to use them as street signs in Thailand (pictures)
Resourceful residents recycled old food trays to use them as street signs in Thailand.
The environmentally-conscious locals transformed the plastic platters into various traffic signs and placed them around Ban Huai Pan village in Loei province.
They cooked up the idea for an ongoing waste segregation campaign in their community.
After a survey of 50 villages in the region, they set a target to build 200 signposts with the help of local officials.
To date, around 70 to 80 signs have already been installed in various intersections.
Rung Taechan, volunteer leader for community development in the Pha Sam Yot subdistrict, said: 'It's a waste if we simply throw away obsolete objects without trying to recycle them. This way, we can find a new use for them.
'These old food trays are waste materials from a temple that they donated to the community to make traffic signs.'
Rung added that the campaign was low-budget as the villagers themselves do the labour and only need to buy steel posts for production.
