Residents hold wooden hut carrying race during festival in the Philippines
Residents held an exciting hut-carrying race for an annual festival in the Philippines.
Locals organised the amusing competition for the 18th Bayanihan Festival in Pasig City, Metro Manila on November 12.
Color-coded teams raced across the designated track while heaving small huts made out of nipa palm.
The 'Buhat Kubo' event - literally meaning 'to carry a nipa hut' - is a yearly tradition in the village of Ugong but has been cancelled for two years because of the pandemic.
Council officer Jomar Santiago said: 'While the contestants were running, we had two ambulances following in case of emergencies.
'Our district holds this race yearly, because it's what made us well-known in the area. During this time, we help each other and we show our unity and discipline.'
Participant Jomel Brozula added: 'Ugong has become lively again. This race is the one thing we look forward to during the festival.'
Bayanihan is a rare but enduring tradition mostly in the rural Philippines where a family asks for help from neighbours when they want to move their home, usually made from light materials like coconut lumber, into another location.
