South African opposition leader calls for dissolution of parliament

John Steenhuisen, leader of South South Africa’s parliamentary opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has called for the dissolution of parliament. Steenhuisen, speaking outside parliament, made the call after a parliamentary panel investigation found that President Cyril Ramaphosa violated the ethics code and the constitution.

The panel investigation was constituted after former intelligence chief Arthur Fraser opened a criminal case against Ramaphosa, alleging undeclared foreign currency was stolen from the president’s Phala Phala game farm and not declared and the theft not reported.

Yesterday the section 89 report was handed to the Speaker of Parliament by Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula from Retired Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo who headed the investigation. The report was made public last night via parliament’s communication platform.

DA Leader John Steenhuisen says there is precedent for the dissolution of parliament. Steenhuisen would prefer South Africa proceed with early elections instead of the country’s fate being in the hands of 4000 delegates at the African National Congress (ANC) elective conference. The ANC is due to go to awn elective conference in two weeks with Ramaphosa until now having been the preferred candidate to continue as party president.

Speculation is rife that Ramaphosa would address the nation in a live broadcast tonight.
