Cape Town, South Africa - 18 January 2024: The Cape Town Carnival launch function was held on the roof of the Media 24 building with the organisers announcing the theme of this year’s carnival as “LEKKER”. Lekker is a Cape Town slang word having a variety of meanings including nice, pleasant, exciting or delicious.

The chairperson of the Cape Town Carnival board, Professor Rachel Jafta, said the carnival is a place where someone can come off the street with no skills and be given the opportunity to learn those skills and become and become a leader of a production team.

Cape Town Deputy Mayor, Eddie Andrews, said his colleague Alderman JP Smith often reminds him that the Rio Carnival is the direction in which the Cape Town Carnival should be heading.

The Cape Town Carnival is an annual tourist attraction which brings thousands of locals and tourists into the city to view the various teams and floats performing. The 2024 carnival will be held on 16 March.
