Severe have left a resident's home a muddy mess as torrential rains hit Malaysia killing at least five people.

Footage shows the aftermath of the deluge that hit Hazrul Hafizan's house in Terengganu state on December 21.

He came home from work only to find brown sludge covering the tiles of his living room, while several chairs and tables had been overturned by the surge of water.

The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said 36,231 locals have been affected as of December 22 morning.

Authorities said at least five people have been killed in the floods caused by monsoon rains.

Malaysia's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has urged residents to follow local disaster agencies continuous rains are forecasted through Thursday.
