Two people were injured when a power bank exploded into flames sparking panic onboard a flight from Taiwan to Singapore.

The pair of passengers - the power bank's owner and his friend - suffered 'minor burns to their fingers' when the electronic gadget overheated and caught fire on Scoot flight TR993 flying to the Taipei Taoyuan International Airport on January 10 evening.

Footage shows a flight attendant telling everybody to move away from the fire while another employee doused the burning device with an extinguisher.

The ventilators were switched on as the cabin quickly filled with white smoke. The stewardess was heard telling frantic travellers to sit down as panic died down.

Passenger Angie Ton recorded the chaotic smoke-filled scene on her phone. She said the plane was on the ground and it returned to the gate following the fire.

Angie praised the cabin crew for bringing the situation under control. She said: 'They did a wonderful job protecting everyone on the flight.'

The Airbus A320neo had been taxiing on the runway preparing for takeoff when the incident occurred. The plane returned to the gate and passengers disembarked three hours later after the flight was cancelled.

The injured passengers received first aid at the airport.

In a statement, Scoot said: 'Scoot sincerely apologizes for the incident. The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority.

'Investigations into the incident are underway. We are rescheduling the flight and will provide affected passengers with accommodation and meals.'

The fire did not affect other operations at the airport, reports said.
