Willie Wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys) are one of Australia’s most loved birds, always on the move, chattering and wagging their tails from side-to-side on landing. They are confiding and plucky, often approaching people and animals closely for food or to collect fur for their nests. We began feeding visiting Willie Wagtails mealworms, the larvae of the beetle Tenebrio molitor. One of the adults began taking mealworms from our hands and was soon followed by its mate and their fledged chicks. In this video shows a Willie Wagtail chick is begging incessantly to be fed a mealworm by one of its parents. It was fed but is then chased off by the annoyed adult who made the peevish chittering call.
