A landslide triggered by heavy rain killed at least 36 people in southern Peru on Monday.

Footage shows muddy floods surging through homes in the city of Camana in the Arequipa department on February 6. The torrents carried mud and debris into a residential area and caused a drooping power cord to spark.

Local media reported that at least 36 were killed in the landslides, including five that died after their van was swept into a river by the floods.

Officials said some 2,000 families had been affected and 630 homes had been destroyed as they send in heavy machinery to clear debris blocking important roads.
