A couple has become the first transgender biological parents in India's state of Kerala.

The two partners decided to have a baby one-and-a-half years ago while in different stages of their gender transition path. They paused their hormone therapy to conceive.

Mr. Zahal Paval (23) gave birth to their baby on Wednesday (February 8). Ms. Ziya Paval (21) shared the happy news on social media.

Kozhikode: A baby was born to a transgender couple for the first time in India. The baby saw the outside world through surgery on Wednesday morning. Born in Kozhikode Medical College. The delivery date was estimated to be March 4, but the doctor suggested surgery. The trans couple decided not to reveal the baby's gender to the outside world for the time being. Although the baby is unable to breastfeed, a system has been made through the hospital's milk bank.

This is a first for transgender community in India. Sahad and Zia Powel, natives of Ummalathur, Kozhikkode. They have been living together for the past three years. Wanting their lives to be different from other transgenders, they thought of having a child. As part of the transition process, both underwent hormone therapy. Despite being trans people, both of their bodies are halfway through the transition. Sahad underwent hormone therapy and breast removal. The desire to have a baby came when the stage of surgery to remove the uterus was reached. Classical dance teacher Zia did not undergo surgery to become a trans woman. Sahad was an accountant in a private firm in Kozhikode. After getting pregnant, Sahad stopped going to work.

There is hope for help from the government or the trans community. A petition for the same is under consideration. A petition has been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Department of Social Justice seeking help. There are worries about the teasing the baby may face as it grows up. But the belief is that the baby will understand them and stay with them. The hope of both of them is that our child will live with his head up in this society.
