This artist based in Lampung, Indonesia, uses ground coffee beans to form stunning paintings.

Mas Bem from Kebun Tebu district delved into using ground coffee beans in 2019 and hasn't looked back.

The artist established a gallery for his art after winning a ground coffee bean painting competition at a festival named Kopi.

Bem has received orders for his work from various regions across the country with each piece taking him up to four days to complete.

His prices start from $25 and increase depending on the size of the art.

Bem hopes that the local government can provide attention by establishing a joint workshop so that many local artists from West Lampung Regency can be included to promote local art, especially coffee from Lampung.

He believes that coffee ground painting has good economic potential for their region.

West Lampung Regency in Lampung, Indonesia has recently found a unique way to express their creativity by using coffee grounds as a replacement for paint in their artworks. This is driven by the abundance of coffee plantations in their area, which led one resident in the Kebun Tebu district, Vidher Bambang or commonly known as Mas Bem, to seriously delve into the art of painting with coffee grounds since 2019.

The art of painting with coffee grounds that Mas Bem learned is based on the tradition of applying coffee sediment onto the surface of cigarettes called "cethe" or "lelet" art. Mas Bem then established a workshop and gallery for coffee ground paintings called Sipuba Craft, after winning a coffee ground painting competition at the Festival Kopi in West Lampung three years ago.

The interest in this art form has been growing among the community, and Mas Bem has received orders from various regions in Lampung and even Java Island. It takes him around 1 to 4 days to complete one painting, depending on the level of difficulty and number of objects desired. One painting with a size of one meter and one object costs IDR 350,000 (around USD 25), while adding an object incurs an additional fee of IDR 50,000 (around USD 3.5) per object.

Mas Bem hopes that the local government can provide attention by establishing a joint workshop, so that many local artists from West Lampung Regency can be included to promote local art, especially coffee from Lampung. He believes that coffee ground painting can become a good economic potential for their region.
