A spearfisherman has come face to face with sharks every day including seven great whites in just three months as they try to steal his catch.

Benjamin Nock is a commercial fisherman who specialises in catching butterfish in the waters off near Stewart Island, New Zealand.

Amazing footage captured from a GoPro on his chest shows one four-metre-long predator swim just metres in front of him while one encounter shows another animal snatching a freshly speared fish.

Benjamin makes sure to stay calm when approached by the sharks even when the animals swim directly at his face or at his flippers, until he can be picked up out of the water.

Benjamin said: “I have had seven white sharks investigate me in the last three months alone. I regularly see other species like school and seven gill sharks too.

“I had one eat almost all my fish then run away. It breached the surface and got almost airborne.

“It’s strange how something so big can sneak up on you so easily, almost all experiences I’ve had they just materialise instantly.

“When I’m in the water with one of these I know there’s little I can do but be calm be ready and have my guard up. I have a speargun and knife and a lead vest which doubles as protection.

“That was an eye opener, especially as it was only 10 metres away and happened in a split second.

“My first encounter I had one almost touch me. But most of the time they keep a good distance.

“I see white sharks less than other sharks. But when I do it’s definitely a buzz and the experiences are usually vastly different. They are usually interested in my catch rather than me.”
