Cape Town, 5 June 2023: Wespoort Primary School held a memorial service for Katlego Banga, a Grade 2 pupil who was one of five school children killed in a horrific early morning accident while being transported to school. Katlego and four other children from schools in Mitchells Plain died after the vehicle they were transported in allegedly spun out of control and overturned and hit a pillar during peak hour traffic on the morning Tuesday 30 May.

Earlier today the driver of the vehicle, Mninikhaya Goodman Mvuli, briefly appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court. His case was postponed until 15 June for further investigation and for him to apply for bail. Mvuli was arrested immediately after the accident and made his first court appearance on Thursday 1 June.

The principal of the school, Malikah Ismail-Meyer delivered an emotional farewell to Katlego. The family of Katlego together pupils released white balloons after the service. Ismail-Meyer said “The death of Katlego Banga has been very devastating to myself and the entire staff.”
