A wild elephant was caught on camera taking a stroll across a dam in Thailand.

The lone jumbo emerged from the woods and approached the structure at the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station in Uthai Thani province at around 6 am on June 13.

CCTV footage shows the animal leisurely walking along the pavement, guided by fence posts and wires on the side to keep it from straying from the path.

The elephant was seen disappearing into the forest after crossing over the dam.

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station staff said it was fortunate the elephant had followed the path or it could have slipped down the dam's slopes.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
