Added 30K Garden Reno
**EXCLUSIVE**
By Shannine O’Neill
THIS COUPLE added £30K to their home value simply by revamping their garden.
TV Talent Manager Dan Newforth (35) and Service Delivery Manager Chris Newforth (33) from Cambridgeshire, UK renovated the run-down and dull back-garden space in their home to replace it with a colourful and bright space for their family for under £15K – doubling their money by adding £30K to the value.
Dan and Chris bought their home together in Cambridgeshire, UK in July 2020 for £352K.
Since then, they have worked tirelessly to replace the drab and boring outside space into something bright and inviting for their family, and in turn has added £30K to the house value.
When Chris and Dan first bought their home, they noticed that the garden space was left unattended with unsightly grass patches due to the previous owner’s dog, and lacked any individuality.
From the moment they bought the home, Chris and Dan vowed to bring colour and creativity to their garden space for their family.
Their dreams finally turned to reality in March 2021 when they began their renovation journey.
Chris and Dan re-built their space from the ground-up, adding in £1.3K worth of new turf and soil, and £750 on a new gazebo and paint.
Alongside the necessities, Chris and Dan spent an extra £3.1K on new raised beds and a garden sofa, alongside £5K on a hot tub for friends and family to enjoy.
Chris and Dan completely transformed their space from a closed-off bannister decking area to a more open rope design and added £800 worth of pleached trees for privacy.
“We changed the decking area from a closed off bannister to a more open rope design,” they said.
“We then added raised planters for interest and planted large structural trees for privacy.
“We also painted our patio which was a cheap hack spending £40 to transform a tired patio into a fresh new space.
“It was plain and neglected, mainly laid to lawn with unsightly holes and patches from the previous owner's dog's constant digging.
“It lacked colour and character.”
Although the end result has paid off in the end, the journey of renovating the space has not been plain-sailing for Chris and Dan, who have done this whilst raising their four year-old son.
“It’s been hard work but very enjoyable throughout,” they said.
“It’s not really work if you are having fun.
“We have all got involved.
“Our son has helped where he can and loves to get involved but also it’s been hard to stop him picking the flowers.
“Many times we have come down to find our tulips pulled out by the root and sat in a glass of water as a present.”
It took over two years for the garden space to be completely finished, but Chris and Dan couldn’t be happier with their end result, especially their decking area that acts as the perfect sun trap in the summer.
“Initially it took four months for the build but two years to be completely finished and to get to the stage we have now,” they said.
“My favourite is the decking area surrounded by plants and the perfect sun trap.
“When people see it, they love it.
“They can’t believe how different it looks and want to know where we got everything from.”
