STORYLINE:
Welcome to the world of robots, master.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"Is it a dream? "
"Nope. This is a real world of robots."
In the field, in tune, in depth. This is Sunny's Spotlight, from the 2023 World Robot Conference (WRC 2023).
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"Robotics and AI certainly have the power to reshape our lives. At the World Robot Conference in Beijing, cutting-edge achievements and latest robot industry exhibits are unveiled."
Navigating through the expansive exhibition venues, you're sure to be captivated by the myriad innovative robots. And some, might serve as companions and assistants in our future lives.
HANDS FREED
At this booth where I've just got a cup of coffee with robot-made latte art, sets of smart robotic arms which can free people's hands are displayed.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): CHEN FANGJIE, Jitri Intelligent Manufacturing
"Our robotic arm is a product of our independent research and development. As you can see, our robotic arm is capable of creating latte art. Additionally, we can also create designs like Cupid's arrow and doll heads. We are considering the use of machines to replace manual labor, aiming for complete automation."
STRONGER ASSISTANT
In some other fields, a robot could serve as an assistant.
This hip active exoskeleton is able to recognize a person's movement intention and enhance physical performance.
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): LING QINGHUA, Mechanical engineer, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation
"Its primary application lies in the industrial sector as well as in firefighting. It serves as a walking aid and also assists in tasks involving bending and lifting. It can provide us with about 30 percent augmentation in terms of assistance. "
SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"How much weight can it assist us in carrying?"
SOUNDBITE 6 (Chinese): LING QINGHUA, Mechanical engineer, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation
"It can provide assistance of about 20 kg. The operational runtime can extend to around 4 to 6 hours on a single charge."
KEEPING COMPANY
As robots are increasingly integrated into our lives, they also take on the role of companionship.
CyberDog 2, Xiaomi's latest bio-inspired robot dog, has become more agile.
The upgraded lifelike pet can see, hear, and feel. It can recognize and interact with its owner like a real dog.
SOUNDBITE 7 (Chinese): SHAO YUANXIN, Engineer, Xiaomi Robotics Lab
"The hardware incorporates a proprietary joint motor, distinguished by its precision and rapid responsiveness. It weighs only 317 grams. This hardware, coupled with the pivotal motor, enables it to perform a wide array of highly dynamic movements. The dog's response is very swift. It's also capable of agile dance moves and powerful flips. As to software, it has evolved to become more intelligent. As a robotic dog, it's more like a smart electronic pet, capable of voice recognition, facial recognition, and identifying vocal patterns. Building on facial and vocal recognition, it can establish a distinct connection with its owner. In other words, it only responds to my actions once it recognizes my face and voice, enhancing its sense of exclusivity and personalization."
"Tiedan, Tiedan, sit down. It's much more obedient than my own dog."
"Tiedan, shake her hand."
Next episode, Sunny's Spotlight will find out how robotics contributes to smarter industries at WRC 2023. Stay tuned with Xinhua.
