STORYLINE:

A new chapter has been introduced to the Tanga port operated under the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) thanks to the renovation of the port by the China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC) since 2019.

CHEC is now working on the upgrading of the container yard before handing over the whole project to TPA soon.

Kiyungi Shangali, a Tanzanian engineer who joined the Chinese company in 2021, said that the project is a great opportunity for Tanga, and even beyond.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): KIYUNGI SHANGALI, Site engineer for CHEC
"I think this is a great opportunity for the development and mainly the development of the people in Tanga by providing opportunities for employment and business. This kind of port is a great opportunity not only for Tanga, but for the whole northern zone itself. It will help the northern zone to develop as quickly as the middle part."

Bian Liang, an acting project manager of the Tanga port, said that the port can now accommodate large vessels for direct berthing, attracting more foreign investment to the region.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): BIAN LIANG, Acting project manager of Tanga port phase II
"Because of lack of maintenance for a long period, it cannot accommodate big vessels for berthing directly. So since 2019, we have completed two phases of the work. And phase I includes the dredging and equipment procurement and phase II includes the new berth construction and new container yard construction. There is a significant increase of foreign companies who invest in Tanga region. I believe in the future more and more foreign companies including Chinese companies will do investments and more works in Tanga region, because of the new port construction."
