A hairdresser and her customer prayed in panic when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit her salon midway through a haircut in the Philippines on Wednesday afternoon.

Beautician Richel Quizon was on a livestream recording herself straightening her client's hair when the tremor struck her home salon in Davao City, Davao del Sur province, on September 6.

Video shows the two women praying as the quake rattled the house for several seconds.

Richel said: 'My God, Lord, the earthquake was so strong. I almost couldn't finish rebonding my customer's hair.'

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said three earthquakes had struck the Davao region and neighbouring Cotabato province within an hour.

The strongest was a magnitude 4.8 quake that struck at 3:51 pm, 28 kilometres northwest of Davao City at a depth of 5 kilometres.

PHIVOLCS said no damage or aftershocks were expected.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
